Manta5 is the company behind bringing the World the first significant consumer hydrofoil bike. The goal is to deliver the same biking experience you’d get on land, on the surface of the water. Sounds crazy, right? It is something you have to see to believe.
The technology works with a combination of the hydrofoil design and the propellers. The frame is lightweight and built to reduce drag. These factors allow you to cruise right along the surface of the water with ease. The whole bike balances effortlessly and travels around 20 km/h. Over eight years of development has gone into Manta5’s project, and the quality of the bike shows.
An aircraft-grade frame, easy replacement parts, and high corrosion resistance lead to a top-notch design. It does take a little more time to get used to than a regular bike. Manta5 has some tips on getting started on their website, and it seems like most beginners are getting the hang of it quickly.
A modular design means transport and assembly are simple. It’s a good thing, too, as the total bike measures 6.5 feet in the rear to 4 feet in the front. The bike can be used in multiple environments, including rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Obviously, the system is entirely waterproof. It uses an electric battery to run, with a 5-hour charging time.
Plus, the pedals add some watts to assist in power. Depending on what pedal rate you set the vehicle to, it gives you more battery time. Right now, Manta5 claims you can get up to an hour with a max assist.
Of course, a lot of the lifetime of the battery depends on external factors like the condition of the water or the rider’s weight. You won’t have to guess how much time you have left, as the onboard display gives you speed and battery level information.
The pilot launch of the product is taking place this November exclusively in New Zealand. Pre-orders are up and sold out for the April launch window of 2020. However, they still have some spots open for the May 2020 shipping schedule. Manta5 says they expect a max production rate of 250 bikes each month once they reach global shipping.
This means if you want to get yours, you might want to consider putting down the 10 percent deposit. The full price is up to $7,490.00, which is quite a bit higher than the $5,175 price tag from a couple of years back. The increase in price is due to the continued development of the product.
More features and better designs continue to be implemented. Manta5 says you’ll get any new features for free once you preorder. If you were on the fence, maybe that would be more of an encouragement to preorder.
Otherwise, you might be looking at a price bump in future releases. This is a pretty fantastic product, and we are excited to see what else Manta5 comes up with in the future. If you want to get this hydrofoil bike in your region, make sure to visit their website and put in a request today.
